Organic French Wine

Like so many others out there, I had a few days off around Thanksgiving, so along with the requisite food-fest, I had time to taste some French wines in the comfort of my own home.

Last year, I became acquainted with Véronique Raskin. Her story is compelling – in 1979, she founded The Organic Wine Company. She became the first woman to import organically grown wines into the United States. Her family had grown wine for over two hundred years on their Languedoc property, Château Bousquette, in the South of France (I’ll be visiting there in January – stay tuned). She sent me four wines to review and I had the chance to try them over the weekend. Here’s the scoop –
2008 Chateau Véronique, Chateau Bosquette – Enticing aromas of violet, wildflowers, cassis and pepper lead into a juicy, balanced mouthful of consistent flavors. Yum!
2009 Saint Chinian Prestige, Chateau Bousquette – Big, dark and lush (think Queen Latifah in a burgundy colored, skin-tight satin gown), with abundant aromas and flavors of plum, mocha, hillside flowers and peppery spice.
2009 Clos la Boheme, Haut Medoc – Intensely aromatic, with scents of ripe plum and blackberry, clove-studded orange peel, smoked meat and black pepper. These aromas continue as flavors with good intensity in the big, richly structured mouth.
NV André Bourget Cartagene Dessert Wine – A must for dessert wine fans! This sweet wine is Madeira-like, with aromas and flavors of toasted, honeyed hazelnuts, candied orange peel and dried flowers. It is rich in the mouth, with a long, sweet finish.
