Fab Cabernet Sauvignons – $23 & Up

Many new red wine drinkers cut their teeth on Cabernet Sauvignon – If wine varieties were compared to ice cream flavors, Cabernet Sauvignon would be chocolate and Chardonnay would be vanilla.

Cabernet Sauvignon has long been considered “the king of red wines”. Royalty or not, I just love drinking it. I like to pair it with prime rib, grilled rib eye steak, roasted vegetables and if I’m really feeling decadent, a good, juicy hamburger. I am The Wine Wench, after all.

I tasted 11 Cabernet Sauvignons from all over California. The prices ranged from $23 to $98, and surprisingly enough, some of the more moderately priced Cabs did really well! The following wines were my favorites:

Five Stars
William Hill
2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley $23

This is one big, dark, sexy, rich wine – think Denzel Washington, wearing a black satin bathrobe in bed, smoking a cherry-tobacco-laden pipe, with a steaming cup of mocha on the bedside table. Naptime – gotta go! Seriously though, this is an excellent Cab at a bargain price. Buy some. Buy some now.

Five Stars
Sojourn
2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Spring Mountain District, Napa Valley $59

This beautifully crafted Cab is balanced and elegant and awash with aromas and flavors of ripe black cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, vanilla and a sprinkling of savory herbs, all wrapped up in a decadently rich mouthfeel. Picture George Cluny, wearing a tux as he reclines on a blanket in the warm sunshine, eating a slab of berry pie. Soft grass cushions your footsteps as you sneak up on him…

Five Stars
Corison
2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Kronos Vineyard, Napa Valley $98

Intense aromas of cassis, black cherry, mocha, cigar box and gingerbread spice lure the taster into a plush, velvety mouthful of consistent flavors. Long, delicious finish. A worthy splurge. Picture Halle Berry poured into a tight red velvet gown, handing you a plate of warm gingerbread as she delicately sips her cappuccino, the foam mustache on her upper lip weirdly becoming as she smiles at you…

Five Stars
Corison
2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley $70

Dark, rich and intensely scented and flavored with cassis, black cherry, coffee, semi-sweet chocolate, orange peel and spice box. The mouthfeel is luscious and velvety. You know the new Old Spice commercial, where that gorgeous (and spicy smelling, I’m sure) guy keeps morphing into different scenarios? That’s this wine in spades – it is gorgeous, beautifully built and keeps changing in the glass. You’re gonna want more!

Four Stars
Schug
2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley $28

Perfumed aromas of spice potpourri, dark chocolate, plum, orange peel and vanilla continue as flavors in the richly textured mouth, and linger through the long, lovely finish. A total steal at $28! This wine reminds me of Kim Kardashian in a skin-tight purple velvet mini-dress and sky-high heels, smoking a clove cigarette as she nibbles on a square of orange-infused dark chocolate.

Four Stars
Cass
2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles $45

Wow! What a sexy wine! Alluring aromas of ripe plum, black cherry, blackcurrant, mocha and spice box continue as flavors in the big, rich mouth. This wine is pre-Brad Angelina Jolie, wearing only a cinnamon and clove dusted apron and high heels as she bakes a cherry pie for you…

Three Stars
Smith and Hook2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Central Coast $30

This pretty wine is super perfumed, with notes of rose petal, orange blossom, ripe cherry and coffee. Medium-bodied in the mouth, with lingering flavors of cherry, coffee, vanilla and baking spices, with floral accents. A frolic through a field of wildflowers with Penelope Cruz comes to mind…
