Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris

Aug 24, 2010 by

Dear Readers,

Please accept my apologies for the recent lack of bloggage. Meniere’s Disease (inner ear malady that causes unpredictable and sometimes severe vertigo) has had me firmly gripped in its dizzy clutches for the past couple of weeks, and I just haven’t had the energy or equilibrium to write. Fortunately, now I am back to my usual, bouncy, wenchy self. I’m back at the keyboard and things are staying somewhat vertical, so here we go –

This blog is all about Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris. I put the slash there, because they are essentially the same wine, kinda like Syrah/Shiraz and Sauvignon/Fume Blanc.

Admittedly, this is not the first white wine I would usually reach for, but there were some real beauties in this flight (and a couple of real dogs, too, but my mom taught me if I can’t say anything nice, don?t say anything at all, so they won’t be mentioned. That’s how I roll).

Here are the good ones:
Five Stars
2008 Pinot Grigio, CA $12.50

Wow! This gorgeous wine packs a snootful of perfume and doesn’t disappoint in the mouth either! Floral aromas of gardenia, honeysuckle and freesia are balanced by scents of green apple and pear, with a pinch of fresh green herbs. These aromas continue as flavors in the rich, round mouth.

Five Stars
MacMurray Ranch
2008 Pinot Gris, Sonoma Coast $26

Oh, Honey! That’s what you’ll say when you sniff this delectable wine, because the first impression is of honey (let’s visualize a sweet, sticky honey-dipped Brad Pitt and go from there, shall we?), white flowers and ripe peaches. The mouthfeel is round, yet refreshingly crisp and the flavors linger a looong time. Oh yeah!

Four Stars
2007 Pinot Gris, Arroyo Seco $18

Granny Smith apples, crisp pear and green herbs play nicely together, from the first sniff, through the refreshingly crisp mouth and on through the finish. Nice!

Four Stars
Derby Wine Estates
2007 Pinot Gris, Derbyshire Vineyard, Central Coast $18

A bouquet of white flowers (lemon blossom, honeysuckle and sweet alyssum), green herbs and ripe apples and pears delight the nose. The mouthfeel of this easy-drinking white is round, yet crisp and packed with consistent flavors. Delicious!
