Cabernets For Every Day ~ Cabs Under $20

Jan 21, 2010 by

Do you love Cabernet Sauvignon enough to drink it every day? I certainly do, and I recently had the good fortune to taste a bunch of excellent Cabs, all priced under $20! At that price, we can all indulge our daily Cabernet cravings! Happy dance!

For my next trick, er blog post, I’ll be reviewing Cabernet Sauvignons, priced between $20 and $30. Sometimes it happens that I receive so many wines for a review that I need to break it down by price point. It is much better (in my humble opinion) to critique wines when they are grouped with like wines. For example, it would not be fair to put a Two Buck Chuck Cabernet Sauvignon in the same tasting line-up as a $90 bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon.

A note of interest- many folks think that Napa Valley is the ONLY California appellation where great Cabernet Sauvignons are produced. Wrong! Check out the five star ratings and appellations below – not one of these Cabs is from Napa!

Also, we bloggers are now required by law to say this ~ all samples were provided by the participating wineries at no charge.
Many thanks to the participating wineries!

My panel and I tasted 16 Cabernet Sauvignons all priced under $20. The following 9 were our favorites:

Come to Mama! This Cabernet Sauvignon is all it should be and I bet it could kick some Cab butt in the higher price categories! Dark and delicious aromas and flavors of mocha, cassis, plum and exotic spices delight from the first taste through the plush mouth and on through the long finish. For $12! Buy some. Buy some now!

Dancing Bull
2006, CA $12
Big, dark and rich! Seductive scents of cherries covered in dark chocolate, spicy cigar box and a hint of mint lure the taster into a richly textured mouthful of consistent flavors. This is a steal, people! Don’t miss out on this fantastic bargain!

Five Stars
Cycles Gladiator
2007, CA $9.99
What a pretty Cab! Alluring aromas of cherry tobacco, plum, baking spices and vanilla continue as flavors (plus some ripe cherry and berry flavors) in the lush, velvety mouth. This wine is banned in Alabama because of its label – it depicts a naked woman and a bicycle flying through a blue background. Big flying deal! Support this brand and fight censorship! The wine rocks and is a steal at $9.99.

Five Stars
Clayhouse
2007, Paso Robles $15
Freshy, fresh, fresh! This Cab is jam-packed with aromas of fresh peppermint, crushed pine needles and ripe cherry. It is big and plush in the mouth, with balanced flavors of cherry, spice and mint. Yum!

Ooooh – sexy! Big, bold and velvety smooth, like Johnny Depp dipped in dark chocolate…Oh, sorry! Got a little carried away there. This Cab is intense, well balanced and loaded with dark chocolate, ripe black cherry, violet and rose petals and spice box aromas and flavors, all wrapped up in a decadently rich mouthfeel.

Four Stars
