A Few Really, Really Good Merlots!

Sep 30, 2009 by

Merlot can surprise you. Just when you’re thinking “Ho hum, another innocuous, user friendly, soft red wine,” one will come along and slap you upside the head.

My panel and I got a good head-whoppin’ the other night when we tasted some Merlots. They range in price from $13.99 to $60 and they all kick serious wine butt! Drum roll, please…
Here they are!

Panel Favorite!
Five Stars
Blackstone Winery
2007 Merlot, Sonoma Reserve, Sonoma County $19.99
Freshy, fresh, fresh! Aromas and flavors of bright, juicy cherry and berry fruits are balanced by juniper and green herbal notes with a touch of spice. Luscious, silky mouthfeel. This wine is a total steal at $19.99! Buy some. Buy some now!

Four Stars
Cupcake Vineyard
2006 Merlot, Central Coast $13.99
Talk about a delicious bargain – this is a great Merlot that is easy on the palate and the pocketbook. Picture a warm cherry pie dusted with cocoa powder and rose petals and you have this wine in a nutshell, er, wine glass. The mouthfeel is decadently rich. Yum!

Four Stars
Merryvale Vineyards
2006 Merlot, Starmont, Napa Valley $26
Black fruits (plum, blackberry and black cherry) mingle with brown spices and a hint of fresh green herbs to delight the nose. These aromas continue as flavors in the seamlessly smooth mouth. Long, delicious finish.

Four Stars
Gloria Ferrer
2006 Merlot, Carneros $19
Enticing aromas of licorice, cocoa, black cherry and blackberry lure the taster into a silken, sexy mouthful of consistent flavors that linger through the finish. A delicious winegasm for only $19!

Four Stars
Audelssa
2006 Merlot, Alder Springs Vineyard, Mendocino County $60
Big, dark and seductive – like Denzel Washington showing up at your door with a dozen red roses and a box of chocolates. This Merlot is loaded with aromas and flavors of dark chocolate, black cherry, baking spices and a touch of mint, all wrapped up in a velvety smooth mouth.
