Sassy, Sumptuous Rhone Whites!
Perfumed, lovely, slippery and luscious in the mouth…do I have your attention yet? Good! These adjectives apply to many wonderful things, but right now, I’m talkin’ Rhone Whites here.
This is a great time of year to be sippin’ on one of these beauties, although I have no problem enjoying a good Viognier, Marsanne or Roussanne or a happy blend of the aforementioned varietals any old time.
My panel and I enjoyed tasting ten Rhone Whites, mostly from California’s central coast region. The following six were our favorites:
2006 Pearl (53% Viognier, 47% Roussanne) Paso Robles $18
Wow! What a delicious wine! Perfumed aromas of ginger, cloves, ripe melon, baked apple and bright citrus meld with floral notes and continue as flavors in the rich, round, balanced mouth. Buy some. Buy some now!
2008 Viognier, Paso Robles $20
Freshy, fresh, fresh! Lemon blossom, jasmine, nectarine, grapefruit and green herbs are the theme in this bright, refreshing wine, from first sniff, through the clean, juicy mouth and all the way to the finish. Yum!
2007 Viognier, Paso Robles $32
Mouthwatering scents of ripe pear, melon and citrus are enhanced by floral and mineral notes. Luscious in the mouth with consistent flavors that linger through the finish. Waaaay too easy to drink!
2007 White Kuvee, Paso Robles $24
Ooooh! Juicy! Green apple, lemon, honeysuckle, jasmine, basil and clean mineral notes delight the nose and continue as flavors in the lush, creamy mouth. Absolutely delicious!
2008 Grenache Blanc, Paso Robles $32
This is a really pretty wine! The nose is perfectly balanced with floral (gardenia, honeysuckle and rose), fruity (ripe melon, lemon and peach) and spicy, mineral notes. The mouthfeel is plush and packed with peachy, melon and citrus flavors, balanced by clean minerality. Yum!
2008 Viognier, Paso Robles $24
Fresh and pretty from start to finish, this delicious Viognier is packed with aromas and flavors of peach, apricot, white flowers and aromatic green herbs.
