Fun Summer Whites Priced Under $20

Jul 20, 2009 by

Summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime! It?s the perfect time of year to chill out and be sippin’ on somethin’ white, crisp and refreshing (and, for budget-conscious wine buyers like me, priced under $20!).

I don’t know about you, but when the mercury is rising, I love knowing that there?s a cool bottle of something yummy chillin’ in the fridge, just waiting for me to get home after work and open it. Just makes my day that much better, Ahhh!

My panel and I tasted a variety of white wines and the following were our favorites:

Five Stars
Panel Favorite!
2007 Pinot Gris, Alsace $14.99
Oh! My! God! What a fantastic wine – and a total bargain, too! Mouthwatering aromas of Myer lemon, melon and nectarine are enhanced by floral (magnolia blossom, jasmine & honeysuckle) and mineral notes. The mouthfeel is slightly viscous and off-dry and loaded with flavors of ripe melon, nectarine and apple with a hint of mineral. These flavors linger through the long, delicious finish. Buy some. Buy some now!

Eberle Winery
2008 Muscat Canelli, Paso Robles $14.00
Like a tropical vacation in a glass – one sniff, then a sip, will transport you to a virtual vacation wonderland of exotic flowers and fruits! You can almost hear the surf gently lapping at the shore and hear the tropical birdsong – OK, back to this wine – a virtual lei of floral aromas (plumeria, jasmine, lemon blossom and gardenia) harmonize perfectly with pineapple, guava, peach and citrus. These aromas continue as flavors in the juicy, delicious mouth.

Four Stars
Cupcake Vineyard
2008 Riesling, Yakima Valley $13.99
What a pretty Riesling! Floral scents of lemon blossom, honeysuckle and sweet alyssum meld with peach, honey-dipped Turkish apricots and mint. Clean and crisp in the mouth, with lingering flavors of ripe peach, apricot, citrus, honey and mint. Waaay too easy to drink!

Four Stars
2007 Riesling, Alsace $14.99
This wine made my tail wag. It is Riesling with a capitol “R!” Aromas and flavors of ripe peach, apricot, citrus, honey, green herbs and resinous, mineral notes are all wrapped up in a zippy, crisp mouthfeel. Long, juicy finish. Totally delicious!

Four Stars
Red Zeppelin Winery
2007 Riesling, Santa Lucia Highlands $17.00
Talk about a perfect summer wine! This, as my wine geeky friends would call it, is a “patio pounder,” meaning that it would be waaaay too easy to drink a bottle or four of it on a hot day. Enticing scents of juicy nectarine, peach, apricot, honey, mint and pine resin lure the taster into a luscious mouthful of consistent flavors. Ride the Zeppelin, baby!

Three Stars
Barefoot Wine
NV Riesling, CA $6.99
This is a sweeter style of Riesling then my panelists and I usually drink, but it’s a total quaff! Sweet scents of ripe apricot, peach, pear, lemon and honey delight the nose. In the mouth, flavors of honeyed apricot, peach and lemon linger through the finish. And, this wine is, as my Jewish grandma would say, “Such a deal!”

Three Stars
Kendall Jackson
2008 Summation, CA $17.00
Dry, crisp, juicy and delicious – that about sums this wine up! Freshly mown hay, lemongrass grapefruit and mineral aromas and flavors continue through the mouthwatering finish. Absolutely delicious!
